Special Needs Kids…

A friend posted this on her facebook this morning (way way way early) and I had to post right behind her… it struck me as kind of… well… duh… but then I thought maybe not so much duh…
Special needs kids aren’t sick or gross. They only want what we all want: to be accepted. Can I make a request? Is anyone willing to post this and leave it on your status for at least an hour? It is Special Education Week, and this is in honor of those who have children with special ……needs… and those who work with children with special needs.

I understand what was meant by the comment, but I chose to expand on its meaning… there are a lot of kids that don’t even exactly fall into what is really typically meant by special needs (epilepsy for example isn’t always considered to be special needs… ).

Why is it considered to be so bad to be a special needs kid… or to have your kid fall into whatever category it is that makes them special needs?  I mean… really… come on… they are kids.   Why is it so hard to treat them just like kids… okay, maybe kids that do have something about them that requires that they be dealt with or taught a little differently, but kids none the less.

How many of us (kids or adults) are really normal.  Look at a bell shaped curve… a normal distribution… what is there like one, maybe five people that are NORMAL… at the very peak of the curve… the rest of us (and that is ONE HECK OF A LOT) are to one degree or another just a little not normal…
